Opening Hours 11.30am – 1pm; 5pm – 10pm; daily

Tamahide is a historical oyako-donburi (a rice box with meat and egg on top) shop. It is a very popular shop in Tokyo, so don’t be surprised if there’s a long queue of hungry customers waiting for their rice boxes. If you want to try the meaty and juicy rice box, you have to arrive early. Since the price of the lunch set is a lot cheaper than the dinner set, we recommend you try the traditional lunchbox.

1. Located in Ningyocho, Tamahide has a distinctive look – like a white castle with large stones surrounding its base.

2. Tamahide’s traditional decor hints at its long history, dating back to 1760. The restaurant is most famous as the birthplace of oyakodon – invented back in 1891!

3. Its signature dish, oyakodon, literally 'parent and child bowl', is a rice dish made with chicken simmered in broth and sealed with egg.

4. Take your shoes off upon entering the restaurant, before having a seat at the low-set horigotatsu (sunken) tables.

5. The lunch menu features four varieties of oyakodon, including the original, three (wing, thigh and breast) meat, with liver and “Ultimate” (lightly grilled).
