Yushima Tenmangu (Yushima Tenjin)
Stepping into Yushima Tenmangu, where Kami of Learning blossomsIf you are a student, pay a visit to the Yushima Tenjin. Founded in 1355, the shrine is linked closely with Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), a Confucian scholar. Numerous Japanese students visit the shrine at exam time, praying for success in the future through Kami of Learning. Also, some believe the nadeushi right outside the shrine brings healing and health. No matter which version you believe, Yushima Tenjin is certainly a place worth visiting!
1. Popular among students, at Yushima Tenmangu the ema (prayer tablets) carry their wishes for success in exams or for admission to their school of choice.
2. Don’t forget the ritual cleansing of hands and mouth with water at the chozuya (purification fountain) when visiting the shrine.
3. The temple honours the kami (spirit) of learning, so time your visit to avoid the crowds during school entrance examination season!
4. Though the shrine was established in 458 AD, shrines are periodically rebuilt in Shinto tradition. The current buildings were constructed in 1995.
5. The Daruma doll on this ema is a symbol of good luck. Traditionally the eyes are only painted in when one’s goal has been successfully achieved.
